Function A-Plus – Now About the Rada Whisk Handle

Rada Handi-Stir Whisk with Aluminum Handle

[Rating: 4/5]

Pros: lightweight, unique design, whisk works great, easy to clean

Cons: handle finish, not dishwasher safe

I always enjoy receiving kitchen gadgets.  They are fun to try, and who knows when one will become a favorite.  A relative gave me this Rada Handi-Stir Whisk with the aluminum handle as a gift.  It is the handiest whisk, and different from other whisks I own, but there is one drawback.

Description

End to end, this Rada whisk measures about 9 1/2” long.  The handle is constructed from solid brushed aluminum with a satin finish.  The business end is made from a 300 Series high nickel grade Stainless Steel, and has a Stainless Steel spring in a U-shape at the very end.  Note:  This is not dishwasher safe.  (This product also comes with a resin handle, which is listed as being more “dishwasher tolerant”.)  The whisk is made in the U.S.A.

My Experiences

A relative presented me with an assortment of Rada kitchen gadgets as a present.  I have been using this Rada Handi-Stir Whisk for over six months.

When I first removed the whisk from the packaging, I was delighted with the sleek design of the whisk.  It has impressive appearance that gives it that more expensive look.  The rectangular handle fits well in my hand, and the whisk has good balance.  I also like the unique design of the whisk head.

There is a U-shaped piece of Stainless Steel that holds the whisk, which is essentially a Stainless Steel spring.  The spring can be removed from the end of the whisk for more thorough cleaning if desired.  This clever design allows the whisk to reach into bowls and pans, the U-shape neatly fitting into corners for a more complete mixing job.

I primarily use this whisk to whip egg mixtures and have used it in a variety of mixing bowls with happy results.  It is also good for stirring gravies or sauces.  I would not use it for heavy-duty mixing.  For instance, it does a terrific job whipping eggs before I add them into batters to bake bread, pancakes, and other food.  It also works well to blend water with drink mixes or to mix gelatin.

Where this Rada product let me down is with the handle.  The brushed aluminum is not dishwasher safe, which is fine for me.  I prefer to hand wash my whisks.  I use a soft sponge and liquid dishwashing soap.  The liquid soaps I have used include Method or Palmolive.  At first the handle was fine.  But over a few months of hand washing, the handle finish has degraded, making the handle look older than the utensil actually is.  The Stainless Steel parts are fine and clean well.  The whisk is very easy to keep clean.  However, I’m disappointed the handle doesn’t keep its finish, despite my gentle care.

Summary

I’m torn with how to rate the Rada Handi-Stir Whisk with the aluminum handle.  Functionality is great.  The design is terrific.  This is the first whisk I reach for when blending eggs.  However, I feel the handle should maintain its finish.  I would not give this as a gift for that reason.  I’m pleased to use it though.

Six Muffins at a Time – Wilton Muffin Pan

Wilton 6-cup Regular Muffin Pan

(5/5)

Pros: evenly heats, non-stick coating, easy to clean, small pan is easy to store

Cons: cups not deep enough for popovers

I have been using this Wilton 6-Cup Regular Muffin Pan for about two years. My old muffin pan was looking rough from years of use, which prompted me to buy the Wilton replacement.

Description

The Wilton muffin pan is designed to evenly spread heat through its heavy gauge steel construction. It has six cups for regular size muffins. Large curved areas at the end of each short pan side provide hand-holds. There are holes at each short end for hanging the pan.

My Experiences

I tend to bake either twelve or six muffins at a time. Usually I make six muffins since the household size has shrunk.

My preference is to make muffins from scratch, but I also have some muffin mixes for when I am in a rush. I always use Reynold’s paper baking cups inside the muffin pan. The paper liners make it easier to remove each muffin from the pan. The liners also make it easier to clean the pan since the batter stays in the liners and not on the metal pan.

The non-stick coating on this Wilton pan is a bonus since no matter how neat I try to be, inevitably a few batter droppings end up on the pan surface. Usually I am able to catch all the drippings and clean them before baking the muffins, but sometimes I miss a spot, or I overfill the liners and the batter touches the metal cup rims. The cooked batter easily wipes away with a sponge.

This is a very easy plan to keep clean. The one area that might need some extra attention is the pan edge has a rim with a crease where the two pieces of metal meet.

This Wilton pan is working great for simple muffin baking. It evenly heats and the pan is small, easy to store in the cabinet on a shelf.

Summary

I’m very happy using this Wilton 6-Cup Regular Muffin Pan. It was affordable, cooks well, is easy to clean and store. Even though this pan is two years old, it still looks great. I would definitely purchase another one.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man — Melamine Plate

Zak Designs Spider-Man 8″ Round Melamine Plate

(5/5)

Pros: melamine durability, fun Spider-Man design, easy care

Cons: the plate is a hit; the plastic tumbler not so much

My nephew is in the super hero stage.  Spider-Man is one of his favorite good guys.  With that in mind, I try to keep mealtime fun with this Spider-Man 8” Round Melamine Plate.

Description

Zak Designs is the name behind this Spider-Man plate.  The 8-inch diameter plate is food-safe and free from BPA.  The durable melamine construction is stain resistant and dishwasher safe.  Note: The plate is not meant to go in the microwave.  The bottom of the plate says for children ages 3-plus.

Our Experiences

I remember Spider-Man web-crawling his way through cartoons and comic books when growing up.  So it is no surprise that my nephew has taken to this web-swinging hero.  At our last family get-together, my nephew raced up to me, wrists tilted and announced he had zapped me with Spider-Man webs.  He proclaimed that I was trapped in the chair and at his mercy!  Then he was off racing toward his next victim.

This melamine plate is a fun way to bring Spider-Man to the table.  The round plate has a colorful design with Spider-Man reaching out while clinging to a web.  The design is primarily red, blue and white.  My nephew enjoys the plate.  It is funny, though, because I also bought a matching Spider-Man plastic tumbler for his drink … and he prefers not to drink out of that particular glass.  Yet he enjoys the Spider-Man plate.

The nice thing about a melamine plate is it is sturdy.  This plate goes outdoors as well as being used indoors.  Whether dining picnic-style, at a table, or lounging in the recliner or on the floor while playing with action figurines or watching television or wrestling bad guys in video games, this is a great plate.

We primarily use it to hold sandwiches, pizza, or finger-held snack foods.  The plate is not designed for microwave use, so food would have to be warmed in another container and then transferred to this plate.  The color holds up beautifully, and the plate has not stained.

I keep the plate in a cabinet above the sink area.  Every once and awhile my fumble fingers joggle the plate, and off it sails into the air to land with a clatter against the counter.  My frantic efforts to catch the melamine plate before it hits the floor are YouTube worthy.  Even with my juggling act, this plate has not broken, cracked or chipped.  I own other melamine products, and find that melamine is a very durable material, which lasts a long time.

Care is easy.  Even though the plate is dishwasher friendly, it is easier for me to run it under the kitchen faucet for a quick rinse and then to let it dry in the rack.  A simple squirt of liquid soap makes for easy clean up.

Summary

I have had great luck with melamine dishes.  This Zak Designs Spider-Man plate is a wonderful addition to the table.  My nephew is happy.  In case you are wondering, no radioactive spiders were used in the writing of this review.

Measuring Cups — Comparing Three Different Brands

KitchenAid, Progressive International & Food Network Measuring Cups

(4/5)

Pros: stainless steel construction is solid, cups and spoons have measurements written on them

Cons: metal outlasts plastic for durability

I bake a lot and rely on my measuring cups.  I want cups that are balanced, have solid construction, the handles won’t bend or break, and are easy to wash and store.  Here are three brands of measuring cups I own and the pros and cons to each set.

KitchenAid

This four-piece set of stainless steel measuring cups (pictured above) come in: 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, 1/2 cup and 1 cup.  The cup handles have the size written on them.  A metal D-ring holds the four cups together but can be removed.  These cups are constructed from 18/8 stainless steel.  They are dishwasher safe (though I always hand-wash them).

These measuring cups are a nice weight.  I’ve been using them a number of years, and the cups still look like new.  The stainless steel looks great; no scratches or stains.  I also like that the measurement of each cup is written on the handle.  The D-ring holds the cups so that they nest inside one another.  I dispensed with the ring, though, so that I could more easily grab the measuring cup I wanted to use without pulling all of them from the cupboard.

The one draw-back of these cups is that the bottom is narrower than the top rim. When nested together, the cups don’t tip over.  If empty, a nudge can tip the cup onto its side.  They have never tipped with ingredients in them.  I am mindful of where I set the cups so they don’t rest on any uneven surfaces.

Overall, this four-piece set is very nice.  It is well constructed, easy to use and clean, and the set still looks like new even after about ten years of use.

Progressive International

I bought the plastic 19-piece set, which includes both measuring spoons and cups.  I like that this set includes measure sizes not in most sets.  The measuring spoon sizes: 1/32 tsp, 1/16 tsp, 1/8 tsp, 1/4 tsp, 1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, 2 tsp, 1/2 tblsp, 1 tblsp.  The measuring cup sizes:  1/8, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 1, 1 1/2, 1 3/4, 2 cups.  The measuring spoons have a plastic ring holding them together.  The measuring cups are divided into two sets (smaller cups attached together with one ring; the larger sizes attached with a different ring).  Sizes are marked on them for easy identification.  They are dishwasher safe.

These measuring spoons are one of my favorite sets because of their long handles.  The spoons easily reach into spice jars.  I liked the measuring cups because of their broad flat bottoms.  Unfortunately, after some use, the handle on the one-cup measure broke while I was scooping flour from the canister.  Once that happened, I didn’t trust the cups in this set.

For me, the Progressive International set has definite pros and cons.  I love the measuring spoons and would buy them again.  However, I would not buy the cups, preferring to use metal instead of plastic, which can break.

Food Network

The five-piece Food Network measuring cups are the first ones I reach for in the cabinet.  They are constructed from heavy duty stainless steel.  The cups have straight sides and a flat bottom.  The cups sizes are: 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 cup.  The sizes are marked on the handles.  They are dishwasher safe.

The metal is solid.  I have no trouble with handles bending or breaking with these cups, and the handles are long.  The measuring cups are designed to nest together to save space in the cupboard.  I do notice that these cups tend to be a snugger fit when nested together (as compared to the KitchenAid cups), but the Food Network cups also include an extra size.

With the wide flat bottom, these measuring cups are very stable.  They are easy to use.  Like the other measuring cups I mentioned, I hand-wash them.

Conclusion

In order of preference: Food Network, KitchenAid, Progressive International.  I use both the Food Network and KitchenAid measuring cups all the time — these two are my favorites.  I can rely on their sturdy stainless steel  construction.  The best part of the Progressive International set is the measuring spoons.  I love the large assortment of spoon sizes and the long handles.  While I appreciated the wide variety of measuring cup sizes from Progressive International, the plastic handles failed me.

I hope this measuring set comparison has helped you.

Versatile Food Storage Container — 4-Cup Pyrex Dish with Lid

Pyrex Storage 4-Cup Round Dish with Dark Blue Plastic Cover

(5/5)

Pros: Pyrex durability, glass does not hold odors, dish will not stain, lid fits well

Cons: glass is heavier than plastic

I own a variety of containers, which I use for leftovers and other food items.  Many of the containers are plastic.  Sometimes, though, I prefer using glass.  I own several of these 4-Cup Pyrex Storage Dishes with Lids.

Description

This Pyrex clear glass bowl measures about 5 3/4” (diameter) and is about 2 3/4″ deep.  It holds four cups.  The glass is smooth and designed for use in the refrigerator, freezer, microwave, and oven.  It is also dishwasher safe.  The bowl comes with a plastic blue lid.  The lids are designed so that the covered bowls can stack atop one another.

My Experiences

I have owned these 4-cup Pyrex containers for a number of years.  The glass is still clear (no fog build-up), and free of chips and scratches.  The plastic blue lids have a bit of flex to them, yet are stiffer than some of the lids belonging to different containers.  The lids show more wear than the Pyrex, but still fit well and look good.

Since these containers are constructed from non-porous glass, they do not hold odor or food stains.  So I immediately grab these containers when I want to store certain types of leftovers or foods.  For instance, dishes that contain tomato sauce or a lot of vinegar automatically are stored in these Pyrex dishes.  I also store Chinese and Mexican food leftovers in them.  When making small batch of refrigerator pickles, this container works well.  The clear glass allows easy visibility of what is inside, too.

In a pinch, these containers also work well as mini-mixing bowls or serving dishes.   I mostly use them in the refrigerator.  I have never used them in the freezer.  They have also never gone in an oven, but work well in the microwave.  If using them in the microwave, do not microwave the lid.  Instead I loosely set a plate over the top of the glass dish to prevent splatters.

I have also used them to store food on cabinet shelves, though this is usually an interim measure since either the dry food I am storing will quickly be used, or I plan to find a more permanent container at a later date.

I nest the 4-cup bowls one inside the other.  They fit together well without sticking to one another.  If you are concerned that the dishes might wedge together, try separating them with paper.  I alternate between storing the lids flat beneath the bowls or keeping the lids loosely balanced atop the containers.

These bowls have been both hand-washed as well as placed on the top rack of a dishwasher.  The Pyrex glass cleans beautifully.  Since the lids are plastic, I prefer to hand-wash them.  The lids have never been in the dishwasher.  For hand-washing, I use liquid dish soap such as the Method brand.  In my dishwashing machine, I use Cascade Complete tabs.

Summary

These Pyrex Containers with Lids in the 4-cup size work great.  They are large enough to hold a nice amount of food without being too small to be impractical.  The containers are long-lasting, too, as well as easy to clean and store.

Working Great — GE Countertop Microwave

GE 2.0 Cu. Ft. Countertop Microwave – JES2051DNBB

(4/5)

Pros: variety of cooking options, defrost, delayed cooking feature, beeper volume adjustable

Cons: wish the electronic buttons on the keypad were more intuitively arranged

Our office space expanded, and we needed a new microwave.  That is how we came to own the GE Countertop Microwave – Model # JES2051DNBB.

Description

This is a 2.0 cubic foot countertop microwave that measures 24 1/8” wide x 13 3/4” high  x 19 1/2″ deep.  It has 1200 watts with a removable rotating glass turntable.  (The round turntable is 16”.)  Features include: automatic defrost, timer, add “30 seconds” to cooking time button, a clock, and a lockout control.  There are also some quick buttons for cooking: popcorn, potato, vegetables, beverages, chicken/fish, and reheating food. There is also a Delay Start button that can be programmed up to 24 hours in advance.  The beeper volume can also be muted or adjusted for volume.

There is a manual that outlines the controls and features.  It also includes some guidelines for how long to cook certain foods.  The microwave comes in several finishes: white, black, or stainless steel.  We have the black one.

Our Experiences

I bought this microwave about a year ago for our office kitchen.  It sits on the counter beneath some cabinets.  This is a larger microwave, and does require some dedicated counter space.  The microwave is attractive in the black finish and has the typical boxy microwave look.

We use the microwave to reheat leftovers brought in for lunch, frozen dinners (such as Lean Cuisine), frozen pizza and burritos or Lean Pockets. Coworkers sometimes save leftovers from a restaurant lunch to reheat the next day.  The microwave sees the most activity at lunch time, though some people bring in oatmeal or other breakfast foods to zap before starting their workday.

While I have not heard anyone complain about this microwave … I do have one pet peeve.  I don’t like how the electronic buttons are arranged.  To cook a frozen dinner, I need to press the “Time Cook” button, then press the numbers on the number pad for the amount of minutes to cook, then press the “Start” button.  I always have to look where the Time Cook and Start button are located since they are not next to each other.  There is also a Power Level button should something require a different power setting.  (The Power Levels are 1 through 10.)

A tip: This microwave has a humidity sensor.  So that the oven accurately “reads” how the food is cooking, make sure the container holding the food is dry before placing it in the microwave (not damp or with condensation on it).

This microwave does a good job at cooking our food.  When I cook according to the package instructions, the microwave perfectly performs so that I don’t have to cook food for extra time.

I have no trouble cleaning the microwave with water and paper towels.  If there is a stubborn area, I use a bit of dishwashing liquid and rinse clean. It is great that the turntable can be lifted out for a thorough cleaning.   I leave the microwave door open awhile to make sure the interior is completely dry.

Summary

We wanted a relatively inexpensive microwave with a variety of features.  This GE Countertop Microwave is working well.  I just wish the electronic buttons on the keypad were more intuitively placed.

Non-stick Cooking with T-Fal Sauce Pot

T-Fal Sauce Pot with Glass Lid (3-Quart)

(5/5)

Pros: non-stick dark interior, stay-cool handles, clear glass lid with vent, dishwasher safe

Cons: I feel more comfortable hand washing the pot (but that’s just me)

For a lot of years, I was a die-hard T-Fal cookware user.  Then I discovered the joys of ceramic pots and pans.  Still, there are a few favorite T-Fal pieces that I consistently use … and this 3-quart sauce pot is one of them.

Description The T-Fal 3-quart non-stick pan is a dark silver-gray color.  It comes with a glass lid.  The lid has a small vent hole, and a round plastic-type knob on the top.  Overall, this pan measures 18” x 13” x 11”.  There is a hole in the pot handle for hanging, but the lid would need separate storage.  The pan is dishwasher safe.

My Experiences This is a great size pot to have on hand.  My ceramic cookware has pans that are smaller or larger than this 3-quart T-Fal piece.  I cook a variety of items in this pan: soup, sauces, gravy, vegetables, instant mashed potatoes (which my nieces and nephew love).  The pot has high sides, too, so that liquids don’t easily splash out.  The pan evenly heats and performs well.

Whenever I have a tomato-based product (ex: tomato soup or spaghetti sauce), I reach for this pan.  The pan size is good … but the dark non-stick interior is great for cooking items that might stain a pan inside.  I have an enamel pan with a white interior that I used to boil carrots and steam turnip, and the interior is stained orange from those vegetables.  I don’t have to worry about that using the T-Fal.

The vent hole is a great addition in the lid.  The hole is small and rimmed with metal.  When the water (or pan contents) heats up, the steam escapes out the hole.  The clear lid is great for seeing inside the pot, too.  I also like the stay-cool knob on the lid and pot handle.

Cleaning is easy with this pan, too.  I soak the pan and give it a quick rinse to rid it of most of the tomato sauce residue.  Then I soak the pan with some liquid soap inside it.  With a quick swish of a sponge, the pan is clean.  Even though the manufacturer says it is dishwasher safe, I have never washed this T-Fal pot in the machine.  It is so easy to hand wash and dry on the rack, I don’t even consider placing it in the dishwasher.

I have owned this pan a number of years, and so far the non-stick coating is all in place.  The pot has proven very durable.  As a note: I never use metal utensils as they may harm the non-stick coating.  Silicone and soft nylon utensils work well.

Summary I would definitely purchase another of the T-Fal Sauce Pots with Glass Lid.  It is a great addition to my cookware.

Adding Fun to the Kitchen! — Zak Confetti Bright Mixing Bowls

Zak Designs Confetti Bright Mixing Bowls

(4/5)

Pros: lightweight melamine bowls nest in one another for compact storage

Cons: bowls can break if dropped

I have been using Zak Designs Confetti Bright Bowls for over four years.  Not only is the design festive, but the four sizes of bowls serve a variety of uses.

Description

Zak Designs Confetti Bowls come with four different size bowls that are designed to nest inside one another for more compact storage.  The bowls are made from recycled melamine.  While they are not microwave safe, they are stain resistant and dishwasher safe.  The manufacturer says the bowls are food safe, meaning they are BPA, PVC, phthalate and lead safe.

Here are the bowl colors and sizes:
Pink:  5.63” / 18 ounces
Blue:  7.13” / 1.25 quarts
Green:  8.88” / 2.5 quarts
Orange: 10.63” / 4.4 quarts

My Experiences

My aunt originally purchased a set of these bowls for us as a gift.  I loved them at first sight.  The bright colors and decorative colorful confetti chips throughout the design brighten the kitchen.  When I run my hand over the bowls, I can feel the melamine confetti chips are not quite flush to the bowl surface, which adds a bit of texture to the design.

I like that the bowls are different sizes and that they nest inside one another.  I keep the bowls on the counter since I use them so much.  I use the two larger size bowls the most to mix ingredients for bread, pies, pancakes, muffins, brownies, pop overs, cakes, potato salad, coleslaw, refrigerator pickles (just to name a few dishes I use them for).  The bowl I use the least is the smallest size.  I tend to use that bowl to whisk eggs or to mix smaller amounts of ingredients before adding them to another mixing bowl where everything is combined.  Since these bowls are so decorative, I can also use them as serving bowls (ex: one for chips and one for salsa or dip).

I enjoy mixing ingredients by hand using a spoon, spatula, or whisk.  I have never used an electric mixer in these bowls.  One thing to keep in mind is that these bowls are much wider at the top than at the bottom.  A silicone spatula/spoon is flexible and works great at lifting all the ingredients from the bottom and bowl sides.

These bowls are also easy to clean.  While they are dishwasher safe, I always use some liquid dish soap and wash them by hand.  Another great feature is that the bowls are so much lighter than my glass mixing bowls.

One caution: Be careful not to drop the bowls.  We had an accident where someone knocked into the nested bowls, sending them crashing to the floor.  Three out of the four bowls cracked and shattered.  The only salvageable bowl was the smallest one.  However, I loved the bowl set so much that I bought another set at to replace it.  I have not had any incidents with the second set of bowls.  They look like new.

Summary

I would purchase these Zak Designs Confetti Bowls for myself or as a gift.  I enjoy melamine and find these bowls are easy to use and clean.  I also like that the bowls are colorful.  They are a fun addition to my kitchen.

Hefty Tall Kitchen Bag — Black for the Dark Trash Can

Hefty Blackout Tall Kitchen Bags, 13 Gallon

(5/5)

Pros: unscented, Odor Block technology, dark bags discretely conceal garbage contents

Cons: the bags will develop a hole if enough pressure is applied

I never gave much thought to using white trash bags in a black trashcan.  But when I came across these Hefty Blackout Tall Kitchen Bags, it occurred to me that perhaps a black trash container should have a black trash bag liner.

Description

Hefty has added their Odor Block technology in an unscented “blackout” trash bag.  They advertise the 13-gallon tall kitchen bags as being able to not only hide the mess but also to neutralize garbage smell.  The drawstring bags are 9 mill thick and 2’ x 2’ 3 3/8” in size.  They come packaged in a sturdy cardboard box.  Package count varies.  I buy them in larger volume to save money.

My Experiences

I like that these bags are unscented and still utilize the Odor Block technology.  I was using Hefty’s white Odor Block bags with an apple scent, and while the scent started out pleasant, it didn’t take long for it to turn nasty.  I much prefer the unscented bags.  The Odor Block technology works, too.  It is not perfect.  For instance, if each day I place wet cat food remains in the bag, eventually the trash will begin to smell.  Overall, though, the trash odor is definitely reduced when I use these bags.

The black color works great in the black trashcan.  I open a bag and drop it into the can, wrapping the outer edges of the bag over the can’s rim.  The bag edges are then covered by the trashcan lid.  If the lid is not perfectly aligned, the black bag blends against the black can.  Since the bags are black, instead of a see-through white, the bag contents are also invisible. These bags also have a silvery-colored drawstring.

The bags hold up well.  I have never had a drawstring break, which can be annoying.  The bags are sturdy.  However, apply enough pressure, or insert a sharp object, and there is a possibility of creating a hole.  The bags have never burst open, though.  The trash remains inside where it belongs.

Summary

I will definitely buy Hefty Blackout Tall Kitchen Bags again.  I like that the dark bags hide the contents, which is more pleasant when people other than me are emptying the trashcan.  The bags are sturdy enough for our needs, and the Odor Block technology cuts down on unpleasant garbage smells.  I buy the bags in the larger boxes to reduce cost.
